Job Description

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist dentist in the examination and treatment of patients by retracting cheeks and tissues and by irrigating and asperating mouth fluids without harm or discomfort to the patient.
  • Anticipate the dentist's needs, and practice four-handed dentistry to provide efficient operative procedures for the patient or as assigned to a dental surgical operating team.
  • Assist a dentist engaged in diagnostic, operative, surgical, periodontal, preventive, orthodontic, prosthodontic, endodontic or pedodontic procedures during examination and treatment of patients.
  • Prepare and mix various materials for use of the dentist during patient treatment, assuring proper timing, contamination control, and measurement.
  • Seat the patient, adjusting the chair to proper position; drape the patient with bib, sterile towel or apron as required; provide a clean cup, sterile instruments required, and the patient's chart with radiographs on the view box, so that the dentist may proceed immediately. Position instruments to the standard storage position, sets up or checks pre-prepared operative trays.
  • Establish rapport with patients, treating them with consideration and gentleness; maintain a constant vigilance for signs of abnormal behavior or appearance in the patient and alerts the doctor to possible emergency situations.
  • Review patient's medical history and alert the dentist to significant problems, assist in updating the patient's history; flag the chart to note significant history problems.
  •  May be required to perform various dental procedures on patients under the supervision of the dentist, such as preparation of the anesthetic syringe with proper needle and anesthetic carpule, placement and removal of the rubber dam, placement of temporary restorations, polishing of restorations, placement and removal of periodontal dressing, taking alginate impressions for study models, removal of surgical sutures, and removal of excess cement following crown and/or bridge cementation.
  • Chart findings of the patient's oral conditions accurately as the doctor verbally calls them out; record the treatment rendered in the patient's permanent chart.
  •  Perform the following clinical supportive functions such as preparing and dismissing patients; sterilizing and disinfecting instruments and equipment; providing post-operative instructions prescribed by the dentist; maintaining supply order; maintaining applicable records, and others as requested by the dentist.
  • Maintain and clean all dental equipment used in above procedures. Keep all work areas clean and tidy. Clean dental operatory and do basic maintenance of the dental unit equipment, chair, handpieces, vacudent, including the disassembly, lubrication and the changing of filters. Ensure care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure quality control standards are adhered to at all times. Comply with all departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Maintain confidentiality.
  • Perform other job related duties as required.
